The Realistic Range, and What Drives It
Bathroom renovation timelines get quoted anywhere from "a few days" to "two weeks", and both can be accurate depending on scope. Here's the realistic range based on what's actually involved:
| Project type | What's involved | Realistic timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom refit | New suite, tiling and fittings in the existing layout — plumbing stays where it is | 5–7 working days |
| Full bathroom renovation | Layout changes, new plumbing and electrics, full retiling, new flooring | 8–12 working days |
| Wet room conversion | Full tanking (waterproofing), level-access shower floor, bespoke drainage | 10–15 working days |
These are on-site build timelines once work starts, assuming the bathroom suite and tiles are already on-site or on order. See our bathroom renovation cost guide for how these tiers compare on price.
The Phase-by-Phase Breakdown
A full bathroom renovation moves through the same core phases regardless of size. Here's what happens in each one:
Design & Survey
Free site survey, suite and tile selection confirmed, fittings ordered. Bespoke or imported tiles can carry 2–4 week supplier lead times, so confirming the design early keeps the whole project on schedule.
Strip-Out
Old suite, tiling and flooring removed back to bare walls and floor. Usually 1 day for a standard bathroom.
First Fix (Plumbing & Electrics)
Pipework and cabling installed or moved to match the new layout. Moving the toilet's waste pipe or relocating the shower position adds the most time here, since waste pipes need the correct fall to drain properly — this is the main reason a "full renovation" takes longer than a "refit."
Waterproofing (Tanking) & Tiling
Walls and floor tanked to make them fully waterproof before tiling begins, particularly around the shower area. This is usually the longest single phase — tanking membrane and tile adhesive both need proper curing time, which can't be rushed without risking leaks or cracked grout later.
Second Fix
Suite fitted, shower screen installed, sealant applied, sockets and extractor fan connected. This is when the bathroom visibly comes together, typically 2–3 working days.
Snagging & Handover
Final sealant checks, grout inspection, and a full snagging walkthrough before we hand the bathroom back to you. Any snagging items are addressed before handover, not after.
Why Tanking and Tiling Take the Longest
Ask any bathroom fitter what actually delays a project, and waterproofing is almost always the answer. Tanking membrane typically needs a minimum curing time before tiling can safely begin over it, and tile adhesive itself needs to properly set before grouting. Rushing either stage to hit an artificial deadline is the single biggest cause of the leaks and cracked grout lines we're asked to fix in bathrooms renovated by other contractors. See our bathroom renovation service page for how we manage this stage properly.
Can You Use the Bathroom During the Work?
If you have a second bathroom or en-suite, the disruption is minimal and the project can run at a normal pace without affecting daily routine. If it's your only bathroom, we keep the toilet usable for as much of the project as reasonably possible, though there will be at least a few days without a working shower or bath — something worth planning around before work starts, particularly for a household with young children.
Wet Rooms: Why They Take Longer Than a Standard Bathroom
A wet room replaces the standard shower tray with a fully tanked, level-access floor that falls gently toward a hidden drain — which is more labour-intensive to install correctly than fitting a pre-formed shower tray. Getting the fall wrong means standing water, so this stage is deliberately not rushed. If you're deciding between a wet room and a standard shower enclosure, our bathroom cost guide covers how the two compare on both price and timescale.
What Can Extend the Timeline
- Tile and suite lead times — bespoke or imported tiles are the most common cause of delay; order as soon as the design is confirmed
- Moving the toilet or shower position — adds time to first fix compared with keeping the layout as-is
- Hidden issues once old tiling is removed — older Manchester properties sometimes reveal past water damage or outdated plumbing behind existing tiling that wasn't visible at survey stage
- Underfloor heating — adds an extra day or two for installation and testing before tiling can proceed
A good contractor flags any of these immediately with a revised, costed timeline rather than letting the project drift. We provide a clear day-by-day programme before work starts.
